Mitchelville Preservation Project hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception for their exhibit
"Finding Freedom’s Home: Archaeology at Mitchelville". The exhibit displays excavated findings from the first large-scale dig lead by Brockington and Associates. The dig uncovered remnants of old homes, wells and garbage pits, and recovered more than 20,000 artifacts representing the personal belongings, tools and household goods from the first self-governed, freed slaves' town in America, established on Hilton Head in 1862.
Finding Freedom’s Home: Archaeology at Mitchelville is on display at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa. The exhibit is open and free to the public daily from 9am – 4pm.
