In many cultures, storytelling is a powerful way to preserve history, pass down traditions, and share knowledge across generations. Within families, there is often one or two members who serve as the Griot, or storyteller, entrusted with safeguarding the community’s heritage. These individuals are deeply respected for their wisdom, holding rich histories that span topics like family milestones, politics, medical practices, and more. At Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, we honor this tradition through our Storytelling and Literacy Program. This unique initiative offers both students and adult visitors the opportunity to delve into the history of formerly enslaved people brought to America, learning about the incredible journey of the people who shaped Mitchelville. Our programs help participants connect with the past while encouraging them to think critically about the present. Program Highlights:

• Storytelling Tradition: Engage with the history of Mitchelville and the Gullah/Geechee culture through immersive storytelling.
• Literacy and Learning: The program enriches existing school curriculums, offering interactive and educational activities that challenge current perspectives.
• Incentives and Support: Thanks to grant funding, we help offset transportation costs for students, ensuring access to these impactful learning experiences. Teachers also receive a complimentary book to take back to their classrooms, further supporting ongoing education.

Mitchelville is recognized as the birthplace of compulsory education in South Carolina, adding a meaningful layer to our program. Here, we foster a love of learning and deepen participants’ understanding of the resilience, culture, and contributions of Mitchelville’s early residents. Many visitors return to continue their journey of discovery, eager to engage further with the powerful history of this remarkable community.
