You can explore your family’s possible connection to Mitchelville at the Heritage Library Foundation on Hilton Head Island.
The Library Foundation is an excellent resource for researching the origins of African-American families from the Pre-Civil War era to the present. The Foundation’s research data base encompasses both historical and genealogical materials, and is a rich source of South genealogical information for South Carolina and the Lowcountry as well as an excellent source of military records for the area. The library has also collected a selection of published papers that provide historical information on the African-American experience in South Carolina. These articles can be a useful starting point in the search for the origins of populations, demographics, and historic events.
