Come Walk with Me In Mitchelville

In 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed -- while most of the African-American slave population was still trying to adjust to the idea of their new post-war freedom -- the people of Mitchelville were busy creating a completely new, self-governed culture that would be the guidepost for generations to follow. Mitchelville was established in 1862, shortly after Hilton Head’s fall to the Union in November 1861, as a population center of the Port Royal Experiment and had been developing as the birth of a beautiful blossom from a dried-up field of scorn and pain. Mitchelville appeared on a hill to show the world what could become of a people left to wither in neglect but who still nurtured that seed to get up and thrive.

Comes discover the evolution of freedom. You can begin the journey at the dock where the slave ships arrived and continues through the development of a thriving post-slavery community in the South.
