Experience the Power of Quilts in the Journey to Freedom

Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
Time: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Location:  Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, 40 Harriet Tubman Way

Featuring the Harriet Tubman Quilt from the Gullah Museum of Georgetown

Quilts have long served as storytellers, tools of resistance, and carriers of culture. Join us for a meaningful gathering that explores the power of quilts during the fight for freedom—past and present.

Community Quilt Display

We invite local quilters and community members to exhibit their quilts during the event. Quilts will be beautifully hung from the trees like clotheslines in a designated area of the park, creating a living gallery of creativity, memory, and heritage.

If you would like to participate and display a quilt, please email:
tbailey@exploremitchelville.org

Event Highlights:

  • The Harriet Tubman Quilt presentation
  • Quilt stories and the tradition of coded messages
  • Interactive activity: design your own freedom quilt square
  • Community quilt exhibition throughout the park

Free and open to all ages. Come celebrate the artistry and legacy of quilting in freedom movements and Gullah Geechee history.
