Job Opening: Mitchelville Magic Facilitator - The Mitchelville Preservation Project

Job Title: M.A.G.I.C. Facilitator

Reports To: Executive Director or their Designee

Job Summary:

This is a part-time position working 15 hours per week for 8 months. Some weekends may be required. Position is responsible for facilitating the Mitchelville Preservation Project’s (MPP) Modeling our Ancestors to Grow and Influence our Community (MAGIC) Leadership Program. Facilitator will help create curriculum for monthly sessions, lead monthly sessions, secure speakers for program, create evaluation tools, and manage program reporting. Facilitator will plan, develop and implement innovative sessions with High School participants focusing on Leadership and the story of the Historic Mitchelville community.


  • Implement curriculum and programming for M.A.G.I.C Leadership program.
  • Schedule and plan field /attraction visits for students.
  • Order books, materials and resources for M.A.G.I.C Leadership program.
  • Assist with historical research about Civil War and Reconstruction for benefit of the project and educational offerings.
  • Collaborate with MPP staff, volunteers and participating speakers to implement goals of the M.A.G.I.C Leadership program.
  • Manage program reporting for funders and internal MPP function.
  • Implement and oversee evaluations for participant tours
  • Oversee participant tour training and coordinate participant tours during the Summer


Experience in program coordination and administration and youth education programs. Ability to provide leadership and work effectively with the project’s diverse constituency (including students, parents, teachers and administrators, cultural institutions, and funding agencies) Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. Must have reliable transportation and be dedicated to mutually established schedule. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Background check for protection of child welfare required.

The Modeling our Ancestors to Grow and Influence our Community (MAGIC) Youth Program is designed to engage area high school students in discovering their own leadership abilities by exploring historical concepts and participating in a variety of learning experiences.

A Microsoft Policy Brief: Building a 21st -Century Workforce, stated that “many students graduating from high school and college today do not have the digital literacy and aptitude for lifelong learning necessary to function successfully in the workplace.” The MAGIC students are encouraged to utilize digital technology for projects and in their program-related communications. Lifelong learning is a core value that is promoted to participants.

MAGIC Youth is designed to engage area high school students of ALL BACKGROUNDS in discovering their own leadership abilities by exploring the lessons of Mitchelville and Reconstruction and participating in a variety of learning experiences MAGIC seeks to build the self-worth of participants by instilling pride in their area, based on the events of Reconstruction and the history of Mitchelville; providing an opportunity for internal growth through interactive activities that encourage critical thinking and collaboration; and introducing the tools necessary for career advancement.

Our Goal... MPP’s Modeling our Ancestors to Grow and Influence our Community (MAGIC) Youth Program utilizes MPP’s mission, collections, programs, and partnerships to engage area high school students in a series of training experiences and internship opportunities that will help them develop into lifelong learners, productive citizens, and community leaders. Our Objectives… The objectives of MAGIC are to:

  • (1) Utilize the history of the founding of Mitchelville, the subsequent impact of Reconstruction and the connection to the 20th Century Civil Rights Movement to foster pride and cultural consciousness
  • (2) Promote student confidence, self-esteem, character, and community involvement through active participation
  • (3) Involve students as leaders in project planning and implementation.
  • (4) Cultivate and promote projects that provide children with the opportunities and challenges to learn about leadership.

Fifteen (15) area High School students will be selected from the Hilton Head Island / Bluffton area. Upon acceptance into the program students are expected to attend a series of eight (8) participatory workshops. The workshops will help build students’ knowledge of Mitchelville’s history, archival holdings, and public programs through three segments: MPP exhibitions, African and African -American history and culture, and leadership development. The training that the students will receive is designed to allow them to connect historical concepts dealing with Reconstruction; its connection to the modern American Civil Rights Movement; and the continuation of struggles for rights and liberties in a contemporary sense. The MAGIC addresses a national concern dealing with the dearth of opportunities facing the youth of today. By providing a positive environment coupled with constant encouragement the MAGIC helps to cultivate skills in the students that will assist them with their transition into productive adults in their communities. Throughout the duration of the program participants are also encouraged to expand their knowledge base through field trips to many sites of historical significance such as the Penn Center and the new Reconstruction Monument.

Students will also be expected to attend and participate in MPP public programs. In the summer of 2019, students who successfully complete the program will serve as Docents (tour guides) at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. To gain approval to give public tours, students will have to give successful tours of the Park area for the MAGIC facilitator, the MPP Project Manager and the MPP Executive Director. Students will be scored on: knowledge of the subject matter, vocal performance (diction, audibility and personality) and time management.

The lessons gained from the project are then required to be shared by the participants in their respective classrooms and schools. After finishing the project, the students must implement some sort of event at their schools to exhibit their knowledge of the subject matter or initiate a drive for their classmates to take an active role in being leaders in their communities. MAGIC alumni are expected to continue to serve as MPP volunteers throughout their high school tenure.
