Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park to Break Ground on New Archaeological Research Facility and Auditorium

Hilton Head Island, SC — Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is proud to announce a momentous step forward in its mission to preserve and interpret the legacy of America’s first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people. On Wednesday, August 27 at 9:30 AM, the Park will officially break ground on its new Archaeological Research Facility and Auditorium, a first-of-its-kind space dedicated to uncovering, studying, and sharing the stories of the Mitchelville community and its descendants.

This groundbreaking marks a significant milestone in the Park’s long-term vision to expand public understanding of African American history through education, research, and cultural interpretation. The new facility will serve as a hub for archaeological exploration and community engagement—bringing together scholars, students, and visitors to explore the deep roots and enduring legacy of Mitchelville.

“This groundbreaking marks a powerful turning point—decades of dedication, vision, and perseverance have led us to this moment,” said Ahmad Ward, Executive Director of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. “For over 25 years, and for many in our community, a lifetime, this project has been a deeply held goal. We’re creating a place where history will be uncovered, voices will be amplified, and generations will come to understand the significance of Mitchelville. This is a victory for our ancestors, our supporters, and our shared future.”
