Recently, our community lost a remarkable leader, visionary, and friend with the passing of Jay Wiendl. As General Manager of Beach House Hilton Head Island, Jay’s leadership extended far beyond hospitality—he was deeply committed to making a lasting impact on Hilton Head Island and the people who call it home.
Jay once said, “This is part of our history. It signifies progress and reminds us of where we have been, and where we can go.” His words will continue to guide us as we carry forward the work he so passionately supported.

Jay’s passion for history, preservation, and community engagement made him a natural champion of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. A lifelong learner with a deep curiosity about the past, Jay once dreamed of becoming an underwater archaeologist. That curiosity led him to Mitchelville, where he saw an opportunity to support an extraordinary story of resilience and freedom.
Under his leadership, Beach House Hilton Head Island became a proud supporter of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, contributing $20,000 to the Mitchelville Era Home Ghost Structure Garden through the 2023 Blue & BBQ fundraising event and an additional $10,000 in 2024 in General Support for the organization. These donations—two of many philanthropic initiatives Jay spearheaded in our community—helped lay the foundation for a space that will not only honor the past but also serve as a source of nourishment, education, and inspiration for generations to come. Jay believed in the power of storytelling, in preserving history, and in making a tangible difference. His belief in Mitchelville’s mission and his commitment to our community helped elevate our work and bring us closer to realizing our vision.
Jay once said, “This is part of our history. It signifies progress and reminds us of where we have been, and where we can go.” His words will continue to guide us as we carry forward the work he so passionately supported.
Our hearts are with Jay’s family, his team at Beach House Hilton Head Island, and all those who were privileged to know him. Though his absence will be deeply felt, his legacy—of generosity, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to community—will remain a guiding light.
Thank you, Jay, for believing in the story of Mitchelville. We will honor your memory by continuing to tell it.
