“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Margaret Mead

After the completion of many houses in 1862, Mitchelville became much more than a refugee camp or a holding area. It was a town of self-governing people with the first compulsory education law in South Carolina, and elected councilmen, an administrator, and a marshal.

Mitchelville was this symbol…this first idea…the kernel of an idea that freedom can be extended to all people in America. – Ben Williams
