Gallery @ Westin Hilton Head

This collection of artifacts, photographs, letters, and documents from the historic Mitchelville community, serves as our major outreach vehicle to tourists. The exhibition is located on the second floor of the Westin Resort and Spa, is free to the public, and will display excavated findings from the first large-scale dig lead by Brockington and Associates. The dig uncovered remnants of old homes, wells and garbage pits, and recovered more than 20,000 artifacts representing the personal belongings, tools and household goods from the first self-governed, freed slaves’ town in America, established on Hilton Head in 1862. The average yearly visitation has increased to 25,000 people.
