Visit The Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park

Our exciting and dynamic private tours for individuals and groups take visitors deep into Mitchelville's history, from docking slave ships to the roots of the Reconstruction era.

Self Guided Tours

Explore exhibitions at your own pace, on your own time. Placards in the park will guide you along the way.

Private Tours

Guided by a member of our volunteer staff, our two private tours offer visitors an opportunity to take a deep dive into the history of Mitchelville. Prices are per person. To book, click the link below to schedule a tour.

Come discover the evolution of freedom. You can begin the journey at the dock where the slave ships arrived and continues through the development of a thriving post-slavery community in the South.

Get a glimpse of life in the Lowcountry during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras on this tour to the Coastal Discovery Museum, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, and Fort Howell. This tour layouts the events of the Civil War that had a direct impact on the development of Reconstruction and “The Port Royal Experiment” in the Lowcountry.  Participants will caravan to the sites in their own vehicles but will still have the benefit of a guided tour of the historic areas. Visit the Coastal Discovery Museum on your own at the end of the tour.
