Interpretive Center Archaeology:
Stories Surround Us

The Interpretive Center will be the heart of Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park and a major installation project. In May of 2025, archaeologists broke ground to survey the area to test what might be there. But for the first time in HMFP history, we opened the investigation up to community members. Over 70 local folks arrived and helped excavate 30 mini-pits called “shovel test pits”, helping to locate hundreds of artifacts. This information from this survey is helping archaeologists formulate a plan to excavate the area before development on the Interpretive Center begins. Excavations are planned for 2026.
